The Sikh community has long sought recognition and justice for the atrocities committed during the 1984 Sikh Genocide. Now, a significant step has been taken toward that goal. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-22), co-chair of the Sikh American Congressional Caucus, has introduced a
resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to formally recognize and commemorate the Sikh Genocide of 1984.
This resolution marks a watershed moment for Sikhs worldwide, signaling that the international community is paying attention and that the suffering endured will not be forgotten. The resolution is supported by a broad coalition of Sikh organizations, including the American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, American Sikh Caucus Committee, Ensaaf, Jakara Movement, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), Sikh Coalition, Sikh Coordination Committee East Coast (SCCEC), and United Sikhs.
The 1984 Sikh Genocide refers to a series of events that began with the Indian government’s military assault on Sri Darbar Sahib (The Golden Temple) in June 1984, known as Operation Blue Star. This operation resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians. Following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984, a state-sponsored campaign of violence was unleashed against Sikhs, leading to further massacres, disappearances, and widespread trauma.
The events of 1984 remain a scar on the Sikh community, a wound that continues to ache, This resolution is not just a symbolic gesture; it is a recognition of our history and a commitment to ensuring that such atrocities never happen again. We urge all members of Congress to support this resolution and stand with the Sikh community in our pursuit of justice.
For decades, the Sikh community has tirelessly worked to raise awareness about these events and to seek justice for the victims. The introduction of this resolution in the U.S. Congress represents a significant victory for this movement. It is a testament to the unwavering dedication of Sikh activists, organizations, and community members who have refused to let the world forget what happened in 1984. This resolution serves as a call to action for governments and international bodies to acknowledge and condemn the atrocities committed against Sikhs and to work towards preventing future genocides.
SCCEC stands united with our brothers and sisters in the continued pursuit of justice for the victims of 1984. This resolution acknowledges not only our pain but our perseverance, and we are grateful to Congressman Valadao for standing with us in this cause. SCCEC urges all members of the Sikh community and allies to contact their representatives and voice their support for this historic resolution. Together, we can ensure that the voices of the victims are heard and that justice prevails.
